What are the major pollutants that make our air unhealthy?

You can think of the Valley as an oven, that cooks special “ingredients” to make OZONE.

Asthma Info:
  • Fresno County has the highest childhood asthma rate. 1 in 6 children have asthma.
  • There is a growing rate of adult-onset asthma.
  • Ozone exposure can cause asthma attacks.

"Statistics on diesel"
  • Statistics on diesel
  • The average lifetime diesel soot cancer risk for a resident of Fresno County is 1 in 5,826.
  • This risk is 172 times greater than EPA's acceptable cancer level of 1 in a million.

"Is Mostly a Problem in..."
  • Is Mostly a Problem in the Fall and Winter Months. This is because of our activities: ( burning in our fireplaces, burning in agricultural fields, harvesting, etc.) and because of the weather. PM gets trapped by our Inversion Layer (the same thing that traps the fog in the winter). Also, the moisture in the air helps the smaller particles form.

PM Statistics
  • 1,300 premature deaths in the San Joaquin Valley due to PM pollution

  • PM pollution has been linked with heart disease and heart attacks

51
What can we do about it?
  • Protect ourselves
  • Try to pollute less
  • Take action to stop air pollution
52
Protecting ourselves
53
Polluting less
  • Carpool
  • Ride your bike or walk
  • Keep your car well maintained
  • Use an electric lawnmower
  • Take the bus
  • BBQ without lighter fluid
  • Don’t burn your fireplace

54
Take Action
  • Teach others about what you have learned
55
Take Action
  • Tell Air District that you want clean air
56
Take Action
  • Tell your representatives that you want clean air
