The public is invited to participate in the Fresno Metro Ministry Community Hunger & Nutrition Forum Wednesday, August 10, at noon at Trinity Lutheran Church. This Forum will focus on

PEDDLING TO CHILDREN
Is food industry advertising directed at children going too far?
The monthly Fresno Metro Ministry Community Hunger and Nutrition Forum invites the public to engage in probing the issue of advertising to children by the food industry and the results seen in chronic disease of children who are consuming soda, fat fast food, and added salt and sweetening in every kind of food. Amanda Purcell, Policy Director for California Center for Public Health Advocacy will present on the topic of ‘Industry Advertising to Children’ at noon, Wednesday, August 10, 2005, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Sheli Glasrud, Fresno parent and former teacher, will provide a local Fresno perspective on the issue. Attendees at the Forum will discuss implementing changes in Fresno Schools and in our Cities. The question to be answered is ‘Should adults begin to take back industry ‘education’ of our children on good nutrition?’ Materials from the ‘Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood’s national organization will be included in the information packets.
There is no cost to attend the Forum. A healthy snack is provided. For further information or to RSVP call 485-1416, Fresno Metro Ministry.

The Hunger & Nutrition Forum continues to address policy and systemic access to nutritious food by all Fresno County. By looking at the food system as the environment we live in, there are specific nutrition and physical activity issues that can be addressed through city, county, and school policies. The public, faith and community organizations concerned about growing issues of hunger in Fresno and in effective use of local resources are welcome to attend and participate.

Fresno Metro Ministry has been involved in community solutions to hunger issues over the last 30 years, primarily in response to hunger crisis: the Big Freezes of 1990 and 1998, the need for a Community Food Bank with adequate freezer space, and when issues of health and nutrition have became a focus of the community because of entrenched poverty.
